Karup Design

Simply well thought out

Karup Design is about living.
About making room for more. In less space

Karup Design was founded in 1972 in the Danish town of Karup,
from which their name arose.

At Karup Design, they combine Japanese aesthetics with Scandinavian design. That style is called Japandi.

It is Karup Design's interest to embrace the uniqueness of every product, to cherish organic forms and to see the natural and pure beauty pine frames represent.

Karup Design's primary focus is and has always been to create space for more, in less space, through functional and stylish furniture.

All their products can be defined in just three words for their features and functions.

Less. ice . amuse

Multifunctionality is – and has always been – Karup Design's hallmark.

Fantastic futon

Multifunctionality is – and has always been – Karup Design's hallmark. However, there is one unique feature that has dominated their product range over the years: the futon.

As some may know, futon is the Japanese word used to describe a sleeping place. A traditional Japanese futon can be tucked away during the day and brought out to sleep on at night. One of the biggest advantages of a futon is that it can be folded and takes up very little space. It fits perfectly with the minimalist Japanese way of life.

Karup Design took this Japanese tradition and added a Danish touch to it. Their futon mattresses are thicker and denser than their traditional Japanese counterparts. The filling may vary depending on which product they are used for.

The futon is a big part of Karup Design's products because of its versatility. It can be easily folded and packed into all necessary functions. At the same time, it works as an excellent bed mattress with the extra filling that Karup Design has added to it.

Main materials

When it comes to materials and production methods, the choices they make at Karup Design play a decisive role in their overall sustainability as a furniture manufacturer. That is why Karup Design makes a point of always making sensible choices.

• Every piece of wood from Karup Design's furniture is FSC® mix-certified (Forest Stewardship Council®).

• Karup Design primarily uses wood from Sweden, Finland and Estonia, which guarantees sustainable forestry.

• Karup Design only uses water-based varnish and paint for the wooden parts of their furniture.

• The filling in Karup Design's sofas and futon chairs is primarily made from waste fibers from textile production, which have been tested according to TÜV Rheinland to ensure compliance with quality and safety standards.

Matters of the heart

Like any responsible company, Karup Design continuously strives to
to make the world a better place.

Unfortunately, not everyone has a place they can call home. Or even a bed to sleep in. That's why it makes good sense for Karup Design to reach out to a large number of homeless people and show them that Karup Design cares about them and to give them a feeling of being at home.

Karup Design has therefore worked over the years to develop and donate a specially made "Bed in a Bag" to the homeless. With this insulated and easily transportable mattress, Karup Design wants to provide more than just a dry set of bedding, and a warmer place to sleep. Hopefully it will give a sense of hope, and of dignity.

In every task, Karup design turns to that philosophy:
It must always make sense.

In collaboration with a local institution, Karup Design therefore donates beds and sofa beds to vulnerable young people who need help to get their own home.
